One day in the 1950s, Hugh Everett III rolled out of bed, covered his hair in Brylcreem, didn’t floss his teeth (it was the ’50s), and came up with an idea: “All these collapse theories seem kind of ridiculous. There’s got to be a way to solve the zombie cat problem without universal consciousnesses or unexplainable ‘just because’ collapses.”

In fairness, “just because” collapse wouldn’t be invented for another few decades, but let’s just go with it.

“I should do something about this as soon as I finish my breakfast cigarette,” he said.

As we saw earlier, Everett considered how the zombie cat problem would play out if collapse never happened at all. He started by looking at the classic zombie cat experiment, with an electron spinning in two directions, next to a spin detector, which is wired up to a gun, which is pointing at a . . . well, you know the drill:
